Once you have everything that you want to bring, lay it out and take a second look.  If you can cut anything out (i.e. extra sweater), put it aside for now.  Pack up and see how it all fits.  If you're having trouble getting it all squeezed in, bring somebody else into the picture for a reality check.  A friend or family member may give you some insight as to how to get everything to fit better.  Sometimes it's tough, but if you can leave something behind, it will still be there when you get home.  Remember, the clothes you bring will probably be pretty worn when you get back, so if you want to keep something for a couple more years it's a good idea to let it sit in the closet for now.
